This month's meeting is 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, August 23 rd

~ Slide Night ~

From the editor's desk:

Welcome to the August Edition of the Sound Exposure Photography Club's Newsletter. A new release date is now in affect. I am a bit late and apologize. As you can see this month is Slide Night. You may bring up to 2 slides each. Make sure to identify your slides on the frame.

We hope to bring the membership through these pages, a treasury of ideas, direction, artwork, offerings and support. ~

Comments:

Yikes! What a heat wave we had recently. Makes for some subtle distortions in those long telephoto shots. This means a great opportunity to try out some macro work. This month's newsletter will focus a bit on Marco ideas.

Remember we are a community of photographers, and support is at the very heart of our club. So do not hesitate to provide your suggestions on how to make our site, newsletter or any of our other activities better for all of our member photographers. ~

SEPC News:

John provided a wonderful demo on cleaning our CCD sensors during last month's meeting. He also provided an excellent website where more info on CCD cleaning and cleaning products are available.

Due to unforeseen circumstances Ted Burford has resigned as our new Webmaster. There is mention that a new webmaster is in the works. We will let you know of any further changes both at the meeting and in the newsletter. Stay tuned!

This Year's Scavenger Hunt has been scheduled for Saturday, September 23rd. Location will be announced at the August club meeting. This is a film camera only event and costs $5.00 to participate. Get the dogs out and gear up for the hunt!

SEPC's Annual Christmas Party needs a curator. Doug Sala has announced he can not manage the details this year and someone needs to step forward to take on this wonderful responsibility. If no one volunteers, there will not be a party this year!! Call Doug at 581-0392 for information and guidelines.

Janice Bell has put together another opportunity for club members to hang their work at the Lakewood Racquet Club during September and October.

From Janice: There will be a Photo Hanging Opportunity at the Lakewood Racquet Club, 5820 112th St. SW, Lakewood, WA, on September 9, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. All photos have to be framed and ready for hanging. Please bring your own hooks and card giving the price, maker and name of the print. The same scenario as the Kimball Gallery display. Your prints need to be picked up Saturday, October 28, 2006. I will not be in town in October so I will leave it up to all the participants to be responsible for picking up their work or seeing that someone else picks it up for them.

SEPC Gallery News:

There was as usual, a wonderful turnout of photographers during June's change out at Kimball's. John Cahill, the featured photographer of the month, provided a excellent example of his mountain flower photography, including some cool macro work.

Our next change out is scheduled for August 27th, Sunday from 1-3pm. Gina Baker has accepted the honors for Photographer of the Month.

The Gateway Newspaper voted Kimball's Gallery and Coffee the BEST ART GALLERY, BEST COFFEE SHOP and BEST BARRISTAS in town! So next time you're in for a brew and of course to see the great photography, you might want to congratulate Warren on his newfound fame!

Remember that any SEPC member can hang their work. This is a benefit of your club membership.

We hope you have a chance to visit the gallery and view all of this month's great work. ~

SEPC Field Trip News:

John Woods has put together a field trip to Tipsoo Lake and Naches Peak Loop. This is happening August 5th. So immediacy of preparedness is of the utmost importance.

From John; A couple of options for you.......

1. Be at Tipsoo Lake at 5:30 am to photograph the sunrise or

2. Meet the sunrise photographers later in the morning (time will be up to you) to hike the Naches Loop to photograph wildflowers, tarns and Mountains. The hike is mostly level and about 3.5 miles long. If you do not want to hike, there are lots of wildflowers around the lake and trailhead. Fantastic views if the weather cooperates (the forecast looks good).

Travel time is about 2.5 hours from Tacoma.

From Tacoma: Take I-5 south to 512. Take 512 east to Hwy 410. Follow Hwy 410 all the way to Tipsoo Lake, just before the Chinook Pass Summit.

I am still undecided if I'll try to camp somewhere near the summit or leave home early in the morning around 2am. I have car camped in the parking lot at Chinook Pass summit. There is also Lodgepole Campground just past the summit on the American River.

Remember to dress appropriately and sturdy day hiking shoes or boots. Be sure to bring water, snack food, lunch (no stores up there), hat, sun screen, etc.

Camera equipment:

Wide angle and telephoto lenses as well as macro gear (lens, extension tubes, diopter, etc.), tripod, cable release and graduated ND filters.

Please email or call me should you have any questions, hope I didn't leave anything out.

See you next Saturday. Check out:

Photo Of the Month:

This month we offer a spooky macro image by your newsletter editor. Hope you enjoy!

This is the eye of an Australian Emu in captivity. His eye reflects the fence and sign requesting the bird not be fed. The image was taken with a Nikon D1x Digital SLR and 17-35mm Zoom lens. Shot at1/2500 at F2.8 in Matrix Metering mode. Sensitivity was set to 800 and White Balance set to Direct Sunlight. Shot was hand held. Remember, macro photography isn't always hands and knees shooting.

If you would like to display your latest masterpiece please email me. You can send your images as JPEG files at 96 dpi and 640 x 480 pixels in size or mail them on CD to Editor-SEPC Newsletter, 3715 75th Ave. CT. NW, Gig Harbor, WA. 98335 ~

Photographic Techniques, Tips and Trips:

Probably the first rule of macro photography is to remember one very basic law. The closer the photographer gets to their subject, the larger that subject will be on film or chip. For example one can almost replicate a 105 mm Macro shot of a leaf on a tree, using a 200mm telephoto and moving as close as minimal focus will allow. This leads to another important factor in Macro work, the working distance. This is the distance between the front of the lens and your subject. If a 50mm lens gives you a working distance of 3 inches then a 150mm lens would be 1.5 times that or about 7.5 inches distance. Remember too, the longer the focal length the less depth of field.

Also, if your tripod doesn't spread it's legs to allow low or ground level shooting heights, then invest is a good bean bag.

And, if you have yet to purchase that expensive Macro lens, and your birthday or Christmas is just too far away, check out the do-it-yourself macro lens from a potato chip can in this month's Internet discoveries section. ~

Well that's it for now. I hope you've enjoyed reading through your newsletter. I would like to reiterate this is your club and your newsletter. If you have any ideas to make your club a better community, please contact any of the board members.

Photography has always been and remains multifaceted; it tells us stories of life, providing insight, pleasure and pain. I am always amazed at the ease in which photography can effect emotion and connection.

It is written, that on July 4th in 1862, as a result of a controversy surrounding copyright issues during a recent art show, the French Court declared that photography be legally accepted as fine art.

I want to thank the French for their marvelous insight.

We look forward to hearing from you. ~
