From the
editor's desk:
Welcome to the August Edition of the Sound Exposure
Photography Club's Newsletter. A new release date is now in affect. I am a bit
late and apologize. As you can see this month is Slide Night. You may bring
up to 2 slides each. Make sure to identify your slides on the
frame.
We hope to
bring the membership through these pages, a treasury of ideas, direction,
artwork, offerings and support. ~
Comments:
Yikes!
What a heat wave we had recently. Makes for some subtle
distortions in those long telephoto shots. This means a great
opportunity to try out some macro work. This month's newsletter will focus a
bit on Marco ideas.
Remember we
are a community of photographers, and support is at the very heart of our club.
So do not hesitate to provide your suggestions on how to make our site,
newsletter or any of our other activities better for all of our member
photographers. ~
SEPC News:
John provided a wonderful demo on cleaning our CCD

Photo Of the Month:

This month we offer a
spooky macro image by your newsletter editor. Hope you enjoy!
This
is the eye of an Australian Emu in captivity. His eye
reflects the fence and sign requesting the bird not be fed. The image was taken
with a Nikon D1x Digital SLR and 17-35mm Zoom lens. Shot at1/2500 at F2.8 in
Matrix Metering mode. Sensitivity was set to 800 and White Balance set to Direct
Sunlight. Shot was hand held. Remember, macro photography isn't always
hands and knees shooting.
If you would
like to display your latest masterpiece please email me. You can send your
images as JPEG files at 96 dpi and 640 x 480 pixels in size or mail them on CD
to Editor-SEPC Newsletter, 3715 75th Ave. CT. NW, Gig Harbor, WA. 98335 ~
Photographic
Techniques, Tips and Trips:
Probably
the first rule of macro photography is to remember one very basic law. The
closer the photographer gets to their subject, the larger that subject will be
on film or chip. For example one can almost replicate a 105 mm Macro shot of a
leaf on a tree, using a 200mm telephoto and moving as close as minimal focus
will allow. This leads to another important factor in Macro work, the working
distance. This is the distance between the front of the lens and your subject.
If a 50mm lens gives you a working distance of 3 inches then a 150mm lens would
be 1.5 times that or about 7.5 inches distance. Remember too, the longer the
focal length the less depth of field.
Also,
if your tripod doesn't spread it's legs to allow low
or ground level shooting heights, then invest is a good bean bag.
And,
if you have yet to purchase that expensive Macro lens,
and your birthday or Christmas is just too far away, check out the do-it-yourself
macro lens from a potato chip can in this month's Internet discoveries section.

Photography
has always been and remains multifaceted; it tells us stories of life,
providing insight, pleasure and pain. I am always amazed at the ease in which
photography can effect emotion and connection.
It is written,
that on July 4th in 1862, as a result of a controversy surrounding copyright
issues during a recent art show, the French Court declared that photography be
legally accepted as fine art.
I want to
thank the French for their marvelous insight.
We look forward to hearing from you. ~
