Comments:

I have yet to receive any comments about changing the release date of our newsletter. Therefore one could assume this raises little concern with our membership. So, beginning with the August edition, watch for your newsletter to be released on the 1st of each month. Now if I can only remember this fact. _grin

Remember we are a community of photographers, and support is at the very heart of our club. So do not hesitate to provide your suggestions on how to make our site, newsletter or any of our other activities better for all of our member photographers. ~

SEPC News:

Due to unforeseen circumstances Ted Burford has resigned as our new Webmaster. There is mention that a new webmaster is in the works. We will let you know of any further changes both at the meeting and in the newsletter. Stay tuned!

If no one volunteers, there will not be a party this year!! Call Doug at 581-0392 for information and guidelines.

Janice Bell has put together another opportunity for club members to hang their work at the Lakewood Raquet Club for September through October. Contact Janice at janicebell7@msn.com for details.

Nisqually Refuge has hosted a guided tour with Gene Sien, renowned wildlife photographer. The final hike's date is listed below. The group will meet at the flagpole at 8 a.m. and walk the 5-½ mile loop. The hike would take about four hours.

Sien, raised in the Northwest, graduated from Western Washington University in Bellingham in 1973. While he was a student at Western, he pursued photography as a minor study along with a degree in geology.

His early photography was done with a simple Kodak box camera, advancing through various formats until he recently switched to digital photography. His work has been showcased in locations such as the state Capitol, private galleries through the state, and Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia.

The refuge is located off Interstate 5 at Exit 114. Follow the signs to the refuge entrance from the freeway. Pets are not allowed in the refuge, and the standard $3 fee per-family entrance applies.

Photographic Techniques, Tips and Trips:

One of the "art of seeing" techniques often overlooked is perspective. We can easily change a lens from wide to a telephoto or something in between. But what happens to the background or foreground. With a wide angled lense the background seems far away, maybe too small to appreciate. You can move the background closer by changing to a longer focal length and moving the camera. Try this technique; using a long zoom lense start as it's widest focal length. As you zoom tighter, move the camera closer to your foreground subject and watch what happens to the background. ~

Photoshop Techniques, Tips and Insights:

Can anyone tell me which key on your keyboard is the Tilde Key? While working in curves you can easily change from one channel to another. To access the Red Channel hit Control 1 (Command 1 for Mac users) or Control 2 for green (Command 2 for Mac) or Control 3 for Blue. To return to the RGB composit channel, just hit Control and the Tilde Key (Command Tilde for Mac) which is the little ~ you see in the lower left of your keyboard. ~

Well that is it for now. I hope you enjoyed reading through your newsletter. I would like to reiterate this is your club and your newsletter. If you have any ideas to make your club a better community, please contact any of the board members.

Photography has always been and remains multifaceted; it tells us stories of life, providing insight, pleasure and pain. I am always amazed at the ease in which photography can effect emotion and connection.

It is written, that on July 4th in 1862, as a result of a controversy surrounding copyright issues during a recent art show, the French Court declared that photography be legally accepted as fine art.

I want to thank the French for their marvelous insight.

We look forward to hearing from you. ~
