Egad!
Tell me it isn't so! Fall is just around the corner. A time of long shadows and
brilliant colors. It also means photographing both hot and cold colors. The
fiery oranges, reds and yellows mixed with the cooler blues, greens and browns.
These colors can affect the mood of your image. This month we try to focus on
shooting for fall.
Keep
in mind, colors are not the only Fall ritual. Halloween is just around the
corner for the kids and family photographers. For wildlife shooters, Rutting
season is soon upon us. Check out the Internet Discoveries section for
helpful links.
Remember we
are a community of photographers, and support is at the very heart of our club.
So do not hesitate to provide your suggestions on how to make our site,
newsletter or any of our other activities better for all of our member
photographers.

Photographic
Techniques, Tips and Trips:
The use of strong fall
colors can create some impressive images. But keep in mind they may also confuse the
subject matter. Try composing your image to minimize the heavily saturated
hues. Maybe adding just a little red or that brilliant orange in the field of
green for example. Selecting areas with smaller amounts of these loud, hot
colors can enhance rather than distort composition. Also, soft light, rain or
distance can sometimes be all that’s needed to mute stronger colors. Another
aspect of this selective process is how you may bring attention to tints, hues
or various shades of color that may have been missed.
Photoshop
Techniques, Tips and Insights:
Desaturation effects in Photoshop are another
way of toning down loud fall colors. For
example: Open your image, go to Image>Adjustments>Levels.
Try moving your black pointer to the right to darken shadows and midtones. Move
the white pointer to the left to boost the highlights. Now duplicate the
background layer (cntrl + j for PC or cmd + j for Mac) and select Image>Adjustments>Levels. Set the
blending mode of the duplicate layer to Multiply
and lower the opacity to around 45%.
Using
your selection tools will allow you to isolate only the colors needing muting
through selective use of bold color placements in your composition.

Photography
has always been and remains multifaceted; it tells us stories of life,
providing insight, pleasure and pain. I am always amazed at the ease in which
photography can effect emotion and connection.
It is written,
that on July 4th in 1862, as a result of a controversy surrounding copyright
issues during a recent art show, the French Court declared that photography be
legally accepted as fine art.
I want to
thank the French for their marvelous insight.
We look forward to hearing from you. ~
